Fee Fi Fo Fum!! Practising the 'f' sound

Does your child struggle to produce the 'f' sound?  If children are struggling with this sound, you often hear them replace 'f' with an 's', for example by saying 'sis' instead of 'fish'.  Making sure your child can put their teeth and lips (articulators) in the right position for the 'f' sound is the first step...

You can make this fun by pulling 'rabbit' faces, putting your top teeth on your bottom lip (face paint not required!) and using your fingers for carrots, or long, rabbity ears!  Do this with your child whilst you both look in a mirror, that way your child will see if they are putting their articulators in the right place.

A great way to encourage your child to produce the 'f' sound, and to produce good models of the sound for your child, is with the Jack and the Beanstalk story.  Stomping around the living room, pretending to be giants, and repeating 'Fee Fi Fo Fum!' is great fun!   Here are some other ideas:

  • flap a fan and make a feather fly
  • feel some fluffy fur
  • find the fish's fin
  • counting five fingers
  • eating fish fingers!

Let your imagination run wild and have fun with the 'f' words!
